Stop the violence. End the silence.
Mission: Safe Harbor saves lives by providing education, advocacy, counseling & shelter to break the cycle of domestic violence.
Volunteer Needs
Currently, Safe Harbor organizes
volunteers into teams based on individual volunteer interest. The teams are
as follows:
• House Volunteer Team: staffing the shelter
• Hospital Accompaniment: on-call and responds to local
hospitals to accompany survivors of violence during medical and/or forensic
exams
• Court Advocacy Team: assisting Safe Harbor staff in
providing information and resources to survivors as they navigate the legal system.
• Children’s Advocacy/Office Manager Team: providing
childcare and greeting individuals in the community office in the evenings
(also includes light administrative work on occasion)
• Community Outreach/Education Team: assisting with
staffing ‘Safe Harbor’ tables at events and/or community trainings
related to intimate partner violence and Safe Harbor services
• Marketing/Special Events Team: assisting development staff
with public relations, fundraising and donor development
• Volunteer Engagement Team: assisting with guiding
the volunteer program, interviewing potential volunteers, being an extra pair
of hands for the volunteer training
Because of state accreditation standards, if you are interested in working
with the individuals who are involved in the programming at Safe Harbor, you
must go through a fairly intensive training that usually involves one evening
a week for 6 weeks and two full Saturdays (a total of 20 - 40 hours, depending
on your specific volunteer interests). Because of the intensity of the 6-week
training, they only occur twice per year, usually in the spring and fall.
If you are interested in attending the training and being an on-going volunteer
with Safe Harbor, please fill out the
Volunteer Application and e-mail it to Stacie.
If you are not able to commit to the full training, but still want to support
the work of Safe Harbor, another option is to participate in our regularly
occurring Safe Harbor Day through Hands on Greater Richmond. Volunteers are
needed to perform upkeep around the house at the shelter and in our community
office. Projects will be determined upon arrival, but will include tasks such
as painting, closet organization, and outdoor maintenance projects. You can
register through the HandsOn Greater Richmond website http://www.handsongr.org/.
